Whilst working on at the sounds for the other city festival as a volenter based at islington mill in Salford, I was inspired by the sound parade from last year in wich I created an alien costume for that made sounds, it was a collaborative live art performance and we paraded round and on church street visiting the various venues. This year I worked on the door of on of the venues of the festival, I wanted to bring this creative atmospher that I had experienced on the streets into the gallery. Below is a video of the sound parade I took part in. As I reflect upon the event of Broke Take over, I would say its was a very successful evening. We had over all around 300 people that attended over the course of the evening, the majority of which all engaged in someway either by observing or taking par in various workshops we had in place around the gallery.
My workshop was a participatory sound workshop. I asked members of the public to join in and get involved in the creation of my sound instillation that was in direct response to the House Proud exhibition. I wanted to give adults the chance to enjoy a childish engagement with the art around them, with a multi sensory experience and in thats regard i feel i achieved my goals. I had people of all ages join in my workshop, from people from the older members group that we had met earlier in the month during the MAG intensive week to students from MMU and even a 2 year old boy who really engaged with the sounds and echoes he was making in the entrance hall. he also encouraged other adults to join in that otherwise probably would have just observed. I loved the contrast between the elderly gentleman say in his mobility scooter and the little boy running around and banging on pans. It showed me that no matter what age or ability you are if you are willing to have fun and let go you can enjoy the kind of workshop i created. In regards to timing and scheduling my workshop was slightly off, as the timetable i had been sent did not quite co inside with the nights event schedule. however i did not let this effect the event it was quickly dealt with via an announcement explaining to the public where and when my workshop would be taking place and i don't believe it affected the numbers of people who joined in. Obviously if i were to do it again i would go over the scheduling more precisely and make sure it is triple checked. on a more critical note of my workshop as a whole, although i feel i achieved my goals and requirements i set myself. having now done this workshop i would do a few things differently when dong something like this again. For example i would make it more performance based as i felt that the workshop could have done with a better focal point as i feel the public would have felt more comfortable in engaging had their been more obvious leaders. i would also mic up the vocals and make them more distinctive as i feel the were sometimes lost and people didn't here the lyrics clearly in the way i wanted. had the vocals been amplified this would have been better. I am personally really happy with how the event as a whole went and feel it was very successful. I learnt a lot in regards to hosting and holding an event outside of the university and feel i have been given invaluable insight into the running of a gallery. Our Facebook event page BRÖKE TAKEOVER: A Thursday Late Thursday the 14th of May Manchester Art Gallery As a result of a collaboration between Manchester School of Art and Manchester Art Gallery (Unit X), the Broke Collective invite you to a Thursday Late takeover in a playful and interactive experiment exploring our perceptions and questioning our consumption of home design. Broke expect this Thursday Late event to take us through the history of home design, to look at our current attitudes towards home design and explore the future for it. Expect interactive workshops, artistic interventions, performances, films and plenty more. Drinks will be flowing, the Broke Collective will be out in force and carpet taste will be discussed. For my Thursday late workshop, I will be collaborating with holly Mavin a lyricist and musician based in Huddersfield, we will create a sound / performance response to the works from the house proud exhibition and the Eastern exchange.
This will be a very as I would like the performance to have room to progress and change over the course of the evening. I ask for audience participation, to do this I will create an alternative musical box. Featuring instruments that are household objects such as pots and pans and tea cups and plates. Whilst looking after my two year old niece I bought a tin tea mug she liked it and decided to run it along railings. And banging it on various things along our walk. The noises changed and she made rhythms and bangs. I want to capture this freedom and childish creativity in my workshop allowing adults to experience this. |
